The Gift of Focus: Making the Most of December
Lots swirling around this month. Here are some of the things we’re hearing and thinking about…
“It’s a challenging month. So much to do… Presents for teachers, Christmas recitals, holiday parties, and then feeling like I need to build gingerbread houses with my kids while still showing up at work like a rockstar. It’s hard to be a superhero in every area.”
Of all the gifts that will be given this December, start with yourself and give yourself a little grace. It’s a busy season, for sure, and there’s no shortage of things that are jockeying for your time and attention. Look at your calendar, assess everything you’re committing to, and ensure every “yes” and “no” aligns with your purpose in life and the things you truly value. When there’s pressure on your time and energy, it’s important to focus in the right areas and not overcommit. And at the same time, it’s important to give yourself some grace. You can’t do it all, nor should you.
This leads us to something else we hear, again related to time and how we spend it.
“It’s that time of year where everything slows down and nothing gets done. No one is doing anything, and everyone is focused on wrapping things up. Time to coast.”
We want to challenge this thinking. We’ve had enough conversations with clients to know that many of you out there are NOT coasting. You are still working hard, setting the foundation for next year for sure, and not letting off the gas. While everyone else is coasting, now is the perfect time to gain ground and make some moves. When everyone else is slowing down, now may be the perfect time to speed up and plant some valuable seeds.
It’s time to get prepared…
“December’s energy is all about planning for next year. We’re using this time to set the GPS for where we want to go. Our teams are talking, spending time envisioning where we’re heading, and setting the goals we need to get there.”
Make the most of the time you have this December. Now is the perfect time, alongside staying active in running your businesses and connecting with customers, to be planning for the coming year. Invest some energy into looking ahead and imagining what’s possible in January and beyond.
Call-to-Action
Don’t waste your December. Personally, and with your teams, end this year well.
