Taking (And Making) Time for Fun at Work
How many apples grow on a tree? Do you know the answer?
All of them!
Our morning started off with another virtual water cooler session, and today Beau came prepared to share a selection of his favorite dad jokes. It was a great reminder that from time to time, amid all the work and the stress, we need to stop for a moment just to giggle.
This idea, of including play and joy in our work, can sometimes feel foreign. There’s so much to do, so many things to get done, and so many responsibilities… how in the world is there time in the middle of all that for a joke?
A better question is this. If there is no time for a joke or room to play, are we really in a healthy work environment? If there’s no margin for fun from time to time, is this all worth it?
Here’s another quick one… Why do you never see elephants hiding in trees?
Because they’re so good at it!
Taking (and making) the time to play requires being a bit intentional. Long before the days of OrangeBall, our partners worked together on a team that played foosball, had Nerf gun battles, and celebrated the holidays with potlucks. We made time for elaborate pranks, wasabi ball challenges, and enjoyed monthly birthday lunches. It would have been easy to see these things as “nice to haves”… we learned that they were necessities.
Fun in our work is a necessity.
In a time where creating amazing company cultures is top-of-mind, fun is an essential element of that conversation. During a pandemic, it is even more important – but also more challenging. With that in mind, making time to tell jokes like we did when we were kids matters even more.
Here was Beau’s last giggle of the day…
Why couldn’t the bicycle stand up by itself? It was two tired!
With that and a sigh, here’s our takeaway for the day…
Call-to-Action
We hope we made you giggle today. Now, go share a joke or a fun fact with someone. They’re easy to find – just search online. Be intentional today to make some time for play, and laughter, and joy in your work. Do it for you, and do it for your team.
